Chapter 1 sets up the story
I finished reading the first chapter of the book. As I read chapter one, I noticed a few different things. It was apparent that Nick felt out of place living in the middle of the West Egg in Long Island. He had connections with people in East Egg. It was an interesting situation to read about when Nick goes to visit his family member, Daisy. As I read about Nick traveling to East Egg, I got the impression that he felt almost more comfortable going there then he did when he was in West Egg where he lived. The dinner party was a very peculiar scenario to read about. I think that through Daisy and Tom's unique relationship, Fitzgerald is providing a demonstration for a difference in moral values between West and East Egg people. Although Tom and Daisy are currently married, Tom is still open about the affair he is having with another woman. This represents a lack of character on Tom's part as well as an insensitivity to the value of his wife's being. I was sincerely disgusted with his character. However, the author describes him as being so successful by age 21 that everything else about him seems not important or a waste. I notice Tom trying to overcompensate for his short comings. What do you guys think about Tom's character? He stood out to me the most in this chapter.
